The Concert

Filed under: Uncategorized — kdane95 at 5:13 pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2009

When I was living in zimbabwe and was still only in my elementary years I was always listening to a band called ‘Good Charlotte’ they were my absolute favourite band at that point in time, but as I got a bit older I stopped listening to them as much and they sort of faded out of my memory. Then during my last year in Belgium my sister had been researching upcoming concerts, and Good Charlotte was listed. I got so excited because I had never been to a concert before (appart from those at the Danish Smukkeste Festival) and immediatly I began to listen to their songs again. We asked my dad if we would be able to go to this concert, and after hours of persuasion he said yes and also that we could bring a friend each.

The drive to the concert hall was filled with excited buzz and as we pulled up outside the hall, 2 hours before the actual concert, we could see a line that extended from the door and around the corner. Apparently if we wanted a good place we would have to be there atleast 3 hours earlier. The line of people we got out and stood behind completely differed from myself,my sister, and both of our friends. All of the other people were dressed in black, with exageratted black eye make up and lipstick. I looked down at my pink top, jeans skirt, necklace, flats and frowned. When I looked up a girl infront of me who was wearing black skinny jeans, studded belt, black and red striped shirt and was wearing jewelery resembling that of brass knuckles, I could see her looking at our group and examining the colours we wore that seemed to stand out from a mile away and was giving us a dirty look. I really did not fit in with this crowd.

Finally after what seemed like ages we were allowe into the concert hall. It wasn’t actually that big, and it had balconies that lines the walls filled with croweds of people, and in the center right infront of the stage was a big open space where people could stand. As soon as we got in my sister led to a balcony directly opposite the stage, and then said “Okay, you guys are going to sit here while me and Cecilia are going to go down into the crowd.” I nearly blew up, they were my favourite band yet I wasn’t allowed near the stage. “Kay,” my sister had said sternly “You’re too small and young, soon enough there is going to be a raging moshpit and you don’t want to be in the middle of it, okay?” I slumped my shoulders and sat back in my chair waiting for the before band to finish so Good Charlotte could come on.

After half an hour the stage lights dimmed and 5 seconds later we could see people shuffling onto the stage in the darkness and screams errupted from the crowd. Suddenly the lights flashed on, and there they were, standing right infront of us. They began with an introduction and then the music began. It was amazing, you could feel the beat pumping as though inside of you, and inbetween songs the lead singer and his brother would talk to the crowd, and say things like “OKay, now were going to get a little personal. Repeate after me, ‘ Oh oh oh oh oh. Oh oh oh oh oh.” and when we did so he’s like “Okay when the song starts I’m going to sing it with you so you know when to go.”

In the middle of the concert the lead singer said to the crowd, “Who wants some sweat?” he wiped his hands on the back of his neck and extened his arms to the crowd and ran his hands over theirs. They would also throw their water bottles out onto the crowd once they had finished with them and also their towels. It was funny because at the very end of the concert you could see 15 people crowded around this one towel and were holding and yanking it for dear life.

It was a memory I will never forget.

Merry Making and your learning

How important is merry-making in society? This was our central unit question — now that you’ve studied a very silly play, complete with heaps of merry-making, what do you think? Is merry-making important? How? When? Why?
I think merry-making is important in society, the saying ‘ All fun and no play makes jack a dull boy.’ definiatly correlates to this. People need time to get out of their shell they stand behind when working and doing things they don’t want to. It is good to be able to confine your wild side to a limit, but its also good to make sure you have fun and let it run wild. If there was no merry-making in this world that we live in today that is being headlined with events like war, global warming, natural disasters and so much more we would spend our lives worrying about these things and not having fun and doing what we want and everyone would turn into robots. Not only this but if there was no merry making and everyone was serious we would all be the same. Think about it, being serious comes only with the constant common features that everyone shares when their serious and this is you know being stern, impatient and stressful, whereas if your merry-making you allow your personality to really show whether you’re naturaly just a serious person it can show when you merry making or if you are really wild and crazy or a half/half kind of person. That is why I think it is important. But there is also a place for work and a place for fun and sometimes they shouldn’t mix.

What do you know now, at the end of our unit, that you didn’t before? Perhaps you now know a couple of lines of Shakespeare. Or maybe you’ve learned how to better speak in front of an audience. Or perhaps you now know how to work better in a group. Or you know that having fun really is the most important part of creating a play. Or you’ve learned that creativity requires long periods of time in order to “get into it.” Whatever it is — please tell your readers what you’ve learned in our unit.

I learned alot of lines from shakespeare, as well as how to interpret the language used. I also learned how to work better in a group, and incorporating movement from the book into a play.

BAC Day

Filed under: Uncategorized — kdane95 at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 11, 2009  Tagged

When I was living in Belgium, there was a day called ‘Bac Day’ devoted to the 12th graders, because it was their last day of school before they started studying for their Bac exams. So, as tradition the 12th graders would dress up in plastic coats and would wait ouside the exits of the buildings during the last lesson, holding flour, whipped cream, shaving cream and eggs. As the last bell rung for the day, the students of 12th grade were station at the doors as students came out. Immediatly, they would spray you with flour, or shaving cream, whipped cream and sometimes eggs. They did not care if you have binders in your hand; it was tradition. And after a while the whole middle/high school would be having flour/egg/whipped cream/shaving cream fights in the courtyard. The bus drivers and monitors were not all that happy to see the targeted students dripping on their seats, when it was all over.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

  1. Look carefully at Antonio’s speech in 3.4.316-321.
  2. Paraphrase it (put into your own words).
  3. Comment on it.
  4. Give some of your own examples of what he is talking about. Use experiences you’ve had, seen, or heard about.

2.  What a deceiver you turned out to be! You personality does not live up to your beauty. You may look good, but really, you’re bad on the inside, which is where all natures real flaws are. Only really mean people can be called deformed. Virtue is beauty, but some one cruel and beautiful is like an empty trunk decorated by the devil himself.

3. I think in this speech, obviously, Antonio is extremely angry with ‘Sebastian’ for not giving him the promised amount of money. And he’s saying that good looks aren’t everything when you have a bad personality, but can be hidden for the most part.

4. Not only in lots of movies, but for instance when I was younger and we used to go to christmas parties my dad would be dressed up like santa and I thought it was the real santa, but now when I think back I realise how wrong I had been.

When I was in zimbabwe and I was starting in the fourth grade and there was a new teacher this year. The first day of school we was really nice and was trying to get to know us all, but by the second day of school she was alot harsher and didn’t seem to care about yelling at us even after only knowing us for only one day.

You know you went to an international school when…

You can’t answer the question: “Where are you from?”

You speak two (or more) languages but can’t spell in any of them.

You flew before you could walk.

You have a passport, but no driver’s license.

You run into someone you know at every airport

You have a time zone map next to your telephone.

Your life story uses the phrase “Then we went to…” five times (or six, or seven times…).

You speak with authority on the quality of airline travel.

National Geographic (OR THE TRAVEL CHANNEL) makes you homesick.

You read the international section before the comics.

You don’t know where home is.

You sort your friends by continent.

You realize it really is a small world, after all.

You feel that multiple passports would be appropriate.

You watch a movie set in a ‘foreign country’, and you know what the nationals are really saying into the camera.

Rain on a tile patio – or a corrugated metal roof – is one of the most wonderful sounds in the world.

You haggle with the checkout clerk for a lower price.

Your wardrobe can only handle two seasons: wet and dry.

You automatically take off your shoes as soon as you get home.

Your house looks a little like a museum with all the “exotic” things you have around.

Half of your phone calls are unintelligible to those around you.

You go to Pizza Hut or Wendy’s and you wonder why there’s no chili sauce.

You know the geography of the rest of the world, but you don’t know the geography of your own country.

You have best friends in 5 different countries.

It takes 24 hours to reach home in a plane

You can only call your parents at 8am and 8pm

You never really use a seatbelt

Your high school football team had to play against itself.. if it had one

You got sick a lot and often had food poisoning

It wasn’t unusual to find a lizard or cockroach in your house

You got to go home twice a year …thats if you’re lucky

You are a pro packer, or at least have done it many times

Living out of a suitcase, you find, has it pros

You bump into your old teachers all the time

Family photos you sent every year took months to arrive and often were in front of some exotic statue or endangered animal no one has heard of

When you return to the your home country, you are overwhelmed with the number of choices in a grocery store ( I stood by the chocolate syrup for about 20 min. because there was a whole row)

You literally have real friends (not facebook friends) from different schools all over the nation on your friends list

Everyone had a ’staff’; maid, house cleaner, driver and babysitter

Most of the 1st graders have cell phones

You get excited when a relative sends a video tape of regular TV with commercials.. its in ENGLISH!

There was only one grocery store.. usually at the embassy that resembled the ones at home.

Once you get home you miss your adopted home and visa versa

You are never content in one place, be it city, state or country for long. You’re a mover.

You never had a part time job until you reached college

Blackouts are quite common, yet after a while no one seemed to notice and sometimes you would find yourself doing homework to the light of your phone or flashlight

Class reunions.. are not at your old school.. not even close

Your passport has more stamps than a post office

When the power cuts out and you sit there wondering when the generator is going to kick on… only then you realize there is no generator

When you carry converters because you actually realize there are different types of outlets

When people give you funny looks because you are a gold or platinum elite member of your airlines

When you constantly feel like you have to catch up with TV programs, actors and other people or songs you are not familiar with

You don’t think its strange that you haven’t talked to your best friend in a couple years, but you know you will always have a unique bond

You wake up in one country thinking you are in another

When a friend talks about their dreams of traveling to across the world to a secluded country and you can give them all the best restaurants and places to visit. You’re like the traveler guidebook.

You don’t even bother to change your watch when traveling

You hate subtitles because you know there is someone that can make an accurate translation.. you!

When you have little or no contact with the locals but are best friends with people across the globe

When you think everyone else is a foreigner in a county foreign to you

When your friends take you to an ‘ethnic’ restaurant as a joke and you can read the menu, order food for them and actually stomach the meal

When you start introducing yourself followed by your country of origin….

Your yearbooks are all different; made of fabrics known to that area and have stuff like elephants on them. Its your favorite keepsake.

Famous people like Uma Thurman went to your school and you had no idea until you researched (AES)

You have to change your passport because it’s full… not because it’s expired… and this several times during your school years

Paying a cop is not considered a bribe

You start to keep your experiences overseas to yourself because people look at you as though you are spoiled for having the opportunity to indulge in a new culture.. sad

You are afraid to go back to visit your school because you know no one will be there that you used to know, they all moved

Did you know…

Practical Jokes

Filed under: Uncategorized — kdane95 at 5:33 pm on Monday, February 16, 2009
  • Have you ever played a practical joke on someone, or been the victim of a practical joke? Write about your experience, making parallels between what happened to you and what’s happening to Malvolio.
  • Make a list of all the epithets that are used for characters in 2.5 (e.g. “rascally sheep-biter,” “overweening rogue”).
  • One April Fool’s, I thought it would be funny to put the salt in the sugar jar and vice versa. So, my sister skipped into the kitchen, eyeing up the packet of rice krispies. This was quite a big deal for us, having ceral because in Zimbabwe things like this were barely ever accessable, and every couple of weeks when we knew a box of cereal would be awaiting us in the mornings, it was the only thing that got us up. So she poured herself a large bowl while I was sitting at the kitchen table, with the ’sugar’ bowl in the middle, and had already frosted my rice krispies with the correct topping.

She sat down, and I pushed the jar across the table towards her. She used her spoon to load a mountain of ’sugar’ onto her cereal. I watched as she closed the jar and dug in. Her face quickly  twisted from excited to bitter. She looked at me, and I burst out laughing, “Kay !” she growled.

A parallel between the two pranks, is that both the pranksters (my self, and sir toby, sir andrew and fabian.)are watching eagerly as the prank unrolls itself, waiting for the final result.

Not only this but the pranks that they used are to do with something that never really happens, i.e people don’t often fall in love with malvolio, and we barely ever get cereal, so they used something that would really upset them.

     List of epithets

    “rascally sheep-biter” (2.5.4-5)

“…comes the trout that must be caught with tickling” (2.5.18-19)

    “overweening rogue” (2.5.25)

“contemplation makes a rare turkey-cock of him” (2.5.26)

    “Marry, hang thee, Brock!”  (2.5.87)

    “This wench” (2.5.150)

    “Noble gull-catcher” (2.5.154)

“most excellent devil of wit!” (2.5.170)

    Nineteen Minutes

Filed under: Uncategorized — kdane95 at 4:08 pm on Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Nineteen Minutes is a novel written by Jodie Picoult.

I am not going to give away the ending or the main details but I will explain the main storyline.

It is a third person book that explores the lives of different people all living in the area of Sterling and are connected by one thing: A high school massacre.

You find out in the beginning of the book that there has been a shooting in the school of Sterling High, 9 kids were killed and one teacher. The twist is that the killer is none other than one of the students.

During the book each chapter either goes backward in time before the killing happened so you could see what happened to the killer to make him want to kill nine of his peers one of his teachers, it goes as far back as seventeen years even. It also shifts to after the killing happened so that you can see how his trial works out.

You alter between the different characters roughly every page and a half, and explore how they deal with the tragedy and also how they took part in the leading up to the decision of the Peter (The killer.) to shoot people in his school.

In the book you grow to love characters but then hate others, and sometimes even changing your mind when you find out about their past through the alteration of time.

It is a really powerful book that captures your attention greatly, it has alot of strong metaphoars and really makes you think. The description is also really well done.

    I recommend it.

    Namibia :)

Namibia is a gorgeous country with so many things to do and stuff to see. My family and I lived there for four years and during those four years we did alot of things like quadbiking, driving through rivers, visiting grand waterfalls, national parks and so much more. But there were two things that always stuck in my mind : The Cheetah Farm in Otjitotongwe and then one of our family friends owned their own farm which we visited regularly.

    Cheetah Farm

We were close friends of the owners of this cheetah farm because we visited it so many times over the years. The cheetah farm was a lodge, campsite, and also a place you could visit for just the day. The lodge rooms were round and brown/orangey bricked with thick black thatch for the roof. I loved staying there.

One of the main things my family loved to do was feed the cheetahs. There was a large enclosure that contained many wild, untamed, hungry cheetahs. What would happen is, we would all board the truck which had an open back apart from a little gate separating us and the cheetahs and so all the guests would get on the back and we would drive into the enclosure with a bin of raw meet on the back of the truck aswell. Once we stopped somewhere, the owner would open the gate and then hop back into the car while the wild cheetahs leaped onto the truck only half a meter away from us maybe less, and pull out a peice of meat from the bin and then hop back onto the ground. Once or twice a cheetah would look up and see all of us watching him, but the raw meat must have been more inviting.

About ten minutes away from the lodge itself, was the home of the owners. They would take us in their truck over to their house where they kept the more tame cheetahs.

We entered the rusty old gate and as soon as we had entered the property, big and small cheetahs were crowding the wheels of the truck. I was young then, and the owners told us that cheetahs played a bit more rough with the younger kids because they feared them less. So, with that in mind i kept away from the cheetahs clinging onto my dads arm as we walked over the main garden. Once around more people, i got less scared and began to play with the cheetahs and pet them. Their tongues would lick your and hands and it felt as though you were being scratched by wet sand paper. They were actually all really well tamed cheetahs apart from one which was still young and wasn’t so used to people yet, and this one used both his paws to grab onto my ankle and sort began scratching me, i was really scared of this one and the owner had to come and help me. I had a mark from the scratches for about a month that.

    Friends Farm

My parents friends owned a big massive farm where they had impala’s, lions, cheetahs and all sorts of animals. It was amazing because whenever we went for bush drives with them, it was like a professional safari from a hotel except it was just our family and theirs standing on the back of their open truck (again.). He owned quite alot of savannah, but once you got past that they had these tall red sanded dunes, where we would stop for a sun downer and play night games and bury ourselves in the sand. Often, whenever we would visit we would pitch up a tent on one of the red sand dunes and stay there.

They also owned two horses and sometimes we would be able to take them out for a ride which was great. But the only thing i didn’t like about this farm was that we caught our own food. My dad, and his friend would shoot the impala’s and then bring them back to the farm where the workers would hang them outside on a hook and skin them, then take out all the neceassary stuff. I even got to see the heart sometimes. but whenever dinner was served, I refused to eat anything they had killed and skinned infront of me.

But other than, this is one of my favourite places.

    The Party

Filed under: Uncategorized — kdane95 at 11:29 am on Thursday, January 15, 2009

    Sir Toby or Malvolio?

I wouldn’t consider myself completely like Toby and nothing like Malvolio or completely like Malvolio and nothing like Toby. I would say I am a bit of both, really depending on how rowdy the pary has gotten. For instance if it were being held in my house and it was getting really out of control, I would lean more towards Malvolio but if it weren’t I would be more like Toby.

    Feste’s song

The song doesn’t really stay in keeping with the mood, it sounds like more of a love song rather than an upbeat party song, however, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew demand for a love song or one about good life. And so I don’t really think that song reflects the scene at all. But the song does say you should “Seize the moment” and maybe that’s sort of what Sir Andrew and Toby are doing, they are having fun and not really caring if they are loud, boisterous and drunk, but then again they are always drunk.

    Joke

I chose the joke, “We did keep time, sir, in our catches. Sneck up!” (2.3.80) I like this one because Malvolio is getting mad at them and saying have you no respect for other people and time? And then the drunken Sir Toby makes a joke out of it by sayin we did keep track of time! In our songs ! So buzz off ! And it’s a really simple joke that you can understand very well without having to really translate the words into modern english.
